Holi stands out as one of the most lively and colorful celebrations globally. Originally, it was all about applying dry gulal and playful water fights. However, nowadays, the joy often comes with synthetic pigments, which can leave unpleasant effects on our skin, hair, and eyes and even pose health risks. That’s why it's crucial to take precautions. Learn some effective Holi skin and hair care tips from experts to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.

Pre-Holi Skin and Hair Care

Getting your skin ready to face the colorful chaos of Holi is a key to minimizing any potential damage from the splashes of colors and water. Here are some steps you can follow-

Cleansing

Clean your face gently before stepping out for the HOLI celebration. Use a mild cleanser to wipe out the impurities and bacteria from the night before. This will keep your skin from multiplying impurities and bacteria.

Moisturize

Before diving into the festivities, it’s crucial to hydrate your skin with a moisturizing cream or lotion. This not only keeps your skin supple but also acts as a protective barrier, shielding it from the chemicals present in the colors and paints. Make sure to apply a generous amount of moisturizer before heading out to play.

Sun Protection

Don’t forget to sunproof your skin with sunscreen. Use a heavy and effective sunscreen that can keep your skin protected at all hours of the day. Also, a thick layer of sunscreen creates an additional barrier between your skin and the holi colors.

Oil Your Hair

Holi colors can affect your skin as well as your hair. The color and water used during the celebration can penetrate to your scalp and can cause irritation or allergies. To protect your hair and scalp, make sure you put oil on your hair. We also recommend using a hair cap or a bandana for that smart look while protecting your hair completely.

We know looks matter, but so does your hair health. Harmful hair colors can impact your hair and scalp in the worst way possible. So, make sure you use the right hair oil. To maintain your holi look, consider taking a small amount of oil, but do not ditch it completely.

Post-Holi Skin and Hair Care

Once you have enjoyed the holi celebrations, it's time to pamper your skin & hair again.

Holi and water splashes can tire your skin. Irrespective of a heavy moisturizer, holi colors can manage to penetrate through the barrier. Post Holi skincare should never be taken lightly. We might think of skipping it, but trust us, you don’t want to regret the day.

Start with Gentle Cleansing

Consider washing your face as soon as you are back. Use a mild face wash that doesn’t dry your skin. The face cleanser should maintain the natural moisture of your skin to prevent any irritation while washing away all the harmful colors and unhygienic water.

Moisturizer/ Face Oil

Post-Holi skincare works as a damage repair for your skin and your hair. After washing your face with a mild face wash, start lathering your skin with a thick layer of moisturizer or a face oil that suits your skin. Face cleansing after chemical colors can rip off moisture from your skin. Using a good quality moisturizer or a face oil and massaging it onto your face with light hands to calm your skin can put back moisture in your skin.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is not meant for only outdoors. Professionals suggest applying a generous amount of sunscreen even when you are indoors, or it is cloudy outside.

Using sunscreen post holi prevents your skin from further sun damage. Since the skin is already exposed to a lot throughout the day, it just needs to be relaxed at the end. Sunscreen soothes your skin and calms it after a stressful day.

Shampoo Your Hair

While attending to your face, make sure you pamper your hair, too. If you styled your hair with a bandana or a cap that did not let your hair suffer, just go with a simple head wash.

However, if you went all in without any hair protection, you need to be attentive towards your hair now. Use a gentle hair shampoo that doesn’t cause dryness. Do not over-shampoo.

Hair Mask

Once done, use a moisturizing and repair hair mask for 10 minutes. Just massage the hair mask into your scalp with light hands to repair your hair after a holi blast. This will give your hair all the nourishment it needs. Repair hair masks can work on the roots and repair the damage caused throughout the day.

Hair Conditioner

End your hair wash session with a good amount of conditioner if your hair is dry and frizzy. This will lock in your hair moisture.

Use Serum

Once your hair is damp, use a chemical-free hair serum to end the hair care routine.

Holi Skin and Hair Care Do’s and Don’ts

  • Steer clear of any vigorous exfoliation for at least 48-72 hours before and after Holi.
  • Skip salon treatments like facials or cleanups for a few days surrounding the festival.
  • If your skin feels dry or parched from sun exposure or heat, treat it to an overnight hydrating mask. Don't forget to pamper your eyes and lips with hydrating masks too for extra soothing.
  • Opt for organic and chemical-free skincare products to protect your skin.
  • Stick to ultra-gentle skincare products before and after playing Holi to keep your skin happy and healthy.
